NextWords suggests the next words of what you write, so the text you write is sent to an AI service to do it. The app keeps an account to count your free daily tokens and to keep your settings in step across your devices. It shows no ads, runs no analytics, does not track you, and contains no third-party SDKs. The app asks your permission before it sends OpenAI anything.
Your account
- In the app you sign in with Apple; on the website you sign in with Google. Sign-in runs on Google's Firebase Authentication, which keeps an account ID, the sign-in provider, and the email address your provider gives it. With Sign in with Apple that can be a private relay address if you choose to hide your email.
- Our server reads the account ID and the email address from your sign-in token on every request. The email address is used only to recognise the owner's account; it is not stored by our server, only by Firebase Authentication.
- You cannot use the suggestions without an account.
What we keep
- Your settings: the language you write in, level, type of writing, style, how many ideas to show, the language your notes and translations come in, the interface language, and whether Furigana is on. They are kept so a second device shows the same settings.
- Your usage: how many tokens you have used today, by account ID, so the free daily limit can be enforced. These counters are removed by themselves after about three days.
- Not your writing. The text you write, the context you add and the suggestions you get are not stored by our server. They stay on your phone, in the app.
OpenAI
- When you ask for suggestions, a topic, a correction or a translation, our server sends OpenAI the text you have written so far, the context you added for that piece, and your settings (language, level, type, style). It never sends your account ID or your email address.
- The app says this and waits for you to agree the first time. Nothing is sent if you choose Not now.
- Under OpenAI's API terms, it does not use this data to train its models, and keeps it for up to 30 days to monitor abuse. See OpenAI's privacy policy.
Where it is stored, and who processes it
- The account and the data above are stored on Google Cloud and Firebase. The server that talks to OpenAI runs in Tokyo, Japan (region asia-northeast1). Everything travels over HTTPS.
- Three service providers process data for us, each only to provide its service: Google Cloud and Firebase (hosting, sign-in and storage), OpenAI (writing the suggestions, in the United States) and Apple (Sign in with Apple). Google also handles Sign in with Google on the website.
- We do not sell your data or share it with anyone else.
On your phone
- The text you are writing, its context, and your settings, in the app's own storage on the phone.
- Your sign-in session, in the iPhone Keychain.
- Deleting the app removes all of it from the phone. The account keeps its settings until you delete the account.
In your browser
- The website keeps your sign-in session, your settings and the piece you are writing in your browser's own storage. It sets no cookies and loads no analytics.
- Signing out and clearing the site's data in your browser settings removes them. The account keeps its copy of your settings until you delete the account.
Keeping and deleting
- Deleting the account (the avatar menu in the app → Delete account) immediately deletes your settings, your usage counters and the account itself from Firebase Authentication.
- Our server logs record a request ID and whether a call worked, without anything you wrote. Google Cloud also keeps standard request logs, which include IP addresses, for 30 days.
What NextWords does not collect
- No advertising, analytics or tracking, and no advertising identifier.
- No location, no contacts and no photos.
Children
NextWords is meant for ages 13 and up. If you believe a child under 13 has made an account, write to us and we will delete it.
